An Easter Letter from Mother Cabrini

Easter of 1895 found Mother Cabrini in New York City. From the orphanage on 14th Street she wrote an Easter greeting in her impeccable handwriting to the Missionary Sisters back in Italy. We thought you might enjoy reading it.

Let us hope we have all risen to a new life… Have you resurrected, then? I will give you the key to the answer:

If every day you rise from your defects, if every day you make new resolutions and say ‘Today I begin again,’ then you have resurrected. Yes, you have not only risen with Christ but like doves you live in the sacred wounds of our dear Spouse. Do not regret the effort involved in conquering self, in dominating your pride…

Beware then of criticism and of minding other people’s business, for this will be a source of many faults which will torment you like thorns on the day of death.

When will you die? When will I? It will be soon enough. Let us prepare ourselves then, but seriously, with a life of perfect abnegation and detachment from self…

Courage, my daughters, be always faithful… May the good Jesus make you spiritually strong and masters of yourselves.

Affectionately yours in SS.C.J

M. Francesca S. Cabrini

Wishing you all the joy of this holy day!
